In July 2026, Frutas y Hortalizas del Sur S.A. announced a recall for frozen GreenWise Organic Blueberries after they were linked to an outbreak of E. coli.

How Did Health Officials Discover This Outbreak?

The FDA and CDC are investigating this outbreak. There have been 12 reported illnesses, including 4 people who were hospitalized, in 2 states. The illness onset dates range from May 11, 2026 to June 5, 2026.

The outbreak was reported to the CDC on July 1, 2026. According to the CDC, the Florida Department of Health identified a cluster of E. coli O145 illnesses. Health officials conducted interviews with the sick people, and 7 reported eating Greenwise Organic Blueberries that they purchased at Publix in the days before they got sick. In response, Publix conducted an internal stop-sale for the product.

What Is the E. Coli Risk?

E. coli O145:H28 is a Shiga toxin-producing strain that can cause severe illness, especially in young children and other high-risk individuals. The symptoms may not appear for up to 9 days after eating contaminated food. When they appear, the symptoms can include:

• Diarrhea, which may be bloody
