UPDATE: Furniture Tip-Overs Linked to 581 Deaths Since 2000
In February 2022, safety officials warned that “the need for TV and furniture tip-over prevention remains strong” after finding 581 tip-over deaths since 2000, of which 472 deaths were children.
Every year, an estimated 22,500 Americans need hospital emergency-room treatment for tip-over injuries, and about 44% of the victims are children under 18 years old.
The report found that:
- 71% of all child fatalities involved a TV
- 62% of fatalities of all age groups involved a TV
- 55% of fatalities involved people being crushed
- Head injuries accounted for 66% of fatalities

What is the Problem?
Children love to pull out the drawers on furniture to climb up and reach things. The problem is that unstable furniture can easily tip over and cause severe injury or death. Children can be crushed or trapped underneath. TVs and other falling heavy objects can also be deadly.
What Types of Furniture Commonly Tip Over?
- Dressers & chests
- Bookshelves
- TVs
- TV stands
- Desks
- Audiovisual (AV) carts
What Can I Do?
Tip-over tragedies can be prevented by securing furniture to the wall with an anti-tip device, anchoring kit, or straps. Please visit How To Anchor It to learn how easy and inexpensive it is to anchor your furniture and TVs.
