85,000 AV Carts Recalled After 3 Children Killed in Tip-Over Accidents
In April 2023, Luxor Workspaces issued a recall for more than 85,000 audiovisual (AV) carts after 3 children died in tip-over accidents.
What Happened?
Three children died, and one child was seriously injured, when they were crushed by a “box” shaped TV that fell off an audiovisual cart and landed on them. These accidents occurred from 2006 to 2016.
What is the Problem?
The recalled audiovisual (A/V) carts are dangerously unstable when loaded with heavy objects, especially large box-shaped TVs (also known as cathode-ray tube televisions or CRT TVs).
The company said that consumers “should be aware of the danger posed by the carts when loaded with CRT TVs.”
These carts may still be found in homes, schools, daycare centers, places of worship, and other places where children are present to transport TVs and other audio or visual equipment.
What AV Carts Were Recalled?
Luxor Workspaces recalled three AV cart base models:
- WT42 “Tuffy” plastic cart
- W42/AVJ42/SS-AVJ42 metal cart
- LP-DUO/TPDUOEQ plastic cart
What Should I Do?
The manufacturer is asking consumers to immediately stop using the recalled carts and contact the company for a free repair.
The company will provide a heavy metal plate that can be installed on the lower shelf to add stability, as well as new warning stickers that warn consumers to place no more than 25 lbs. on each shelf.
