EleCare Recalled After Deadly Infection Outbreak

In February 2022, a massive amount of EleCare baby formula was recalled by Abbott Laboratories due to a deadly outbreak of Cronobacter infections. Abbott also recalled Similac® and Alimentum® Hypoallergenic Infant Formula.

How Many Babies Got Sick?

At least 4 babies were infected between September 16, 2021 and January 5, 2022, including 2 babies who died in Ohio. The illnesses were reported in Minnesota (1), Ohio (2) and Texas (1), according to the CDC outbreak investigation.

The following products are included in the recall if they have all three items below:

  • the first two digits of the code are 22 through 37 and
  • the code on the container contains K8, SH, or Z2, and
  • the expiration date is 4-1-2022 (APR 2022) or later

What is Cronobacter?

Cronobacter is a type of bacteria that can survive in very dry places, such as powdered baby formula. Infections are rare, but they are often deadly in babies, particularly premature and low-birth-weight babies.

What is the Risk?

Cronobacter infections can spread beyond the digestive system to the blood or the central nervous system, causing sepsis (blood infection) or meningitis (inflammation of brain and spinal cord). A severe intestinal infection may also cause Necrotizing Enterocolitis (NEC).

Symptoms of Cronobacter Infections

  • Fever
  • Very low energy
  • Poor feeding
  • Irritability
  • Temperature changes
  • Jaundice (yellow skin and eyes)
