What is Alimentum?

Similac Alimentum Hypoallergenic Infant Formula is a brand of powdered baby formula that is designed to be fed to babies who have trouble digesting cow’s milk-based formulas. Alimentum is manufactured by Abbott Laboratories.

Alimentum Baby Formula Recall

In February 2022, Abbott Laboratories recalled Similac, Alimentum and EleCare baby formulas that were manufactured at a facility in Sturgis, Michigan, after they were linked to a deadly outbreak of Cronobacter infections in babies.

How Many Babies Got Sick?

At least 4 babies were infected with Cronobacter in Texas, Ohio and Minnesota between September 16, 2021 and January 5, 2022, including 2 babies in Ohio who died, according to the CDC outbreak investigation. The babies were fed Similac Sensitive, Similac Pro-total Comfort, Similac Advance, and Similac PM 60/40 before falling ill.

  • the first two digits of the code are 22 through 37 and
  • the code on the container contains K8, SH, or Z2, and
  • the expiration date is 4-1-2022 (APR 2022) or later

What is Cronobacter?

Cronobacter sakazakii is a bacteria that can survive in very dry places, such as powdered infant formula or powdered milk. Infections are very rare, but they are often deadly for babies.

What is the Risk?

The infection can spread beyond the digestive system to the blood, causing a severe bloodstream infection (sepsis) or inflammation of the lining surrounding the brain and spinal cord (meningitis). In very young babies, Cronobacter infections can also cause a life-threatening intestinal complication called Necrotizing Enterocolitis (NEC).

Symptoms of Cronobacter Infections

The symptoms of a Cronobacter infection in babies can include:

  • Fever
  • Very low energy
  • Poor feeding
  • Irritability
  • Temperature changes
  • Jaundice (yellow skin and eyes)
  • Grunting breaths
  • Abnormal movements
  • Seizures
  • Brain damage
  • Intestinal damage
