Eggs Grown on Texas Farms Linked to Outbreak Sickening Dozens

Midwest Poultry Services, L.P. grows its eggs on two farms in Texas, and those same eggs are now at the center of a multistate outbreak investigation led by the CDC. As of July 24, 2026, health officials have confirmed 98 illnesses in 17 states, with 26 hospitalizations and no deaths reported.

The company recalled 1,589,577 dozen eggs, more than 19 million eggs, on July 22, 2026, due to possible contamination with Salmonella Enteritidis that was found during its own environmental tests.

What Is the Salmonella Risk to Texas Families?

About a quarter of people who got sick in this outbreak, 26 out of 98, have needed hospital care. The symptoms of Salmonella infection typically include:

  • Fever
  • Diarrhea, which may be bloody
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Abdominal cramps

Young children, older adults, and people with weakened immune systems face the greatest risk of a serious infection, and the CDC advises calling a doctor right away for a fever above 102°F, diarrhea lasting more than two days, or signs of dehydration.

Which Eggs Were Recalled?

The recalled eggs were sold in Texas and neighboring states under multiple brand names:

  • Kroger, Large through Jumbo
  • Simple Truth Cage Free Brown
  • Brookshire’s, Large through Jumbo
  • Country Morning
  • Sunups
  • Bulk Grade A and Grade AA cartons

Only cartons stamped with plant code P-1950 or 0840962 and a Julian date between 157 and 184 are part of the recall, with sell-by or best-by dates between July 20 and August 17, 2026.

Where Were They Sold?

Kroger stores across Texas and Louisiana carried the recalled eggs, along with Brookshire Grocery stores in Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Louisiana, New Mexico, and Mississippi.

If you still have any of these cartons at home, the CDC and FDA recommend you throw them out or return them for a refund rather than eat them.

For the full list of affected UPC codes, see the FDA recall notice.

How Many Texans Have Been Affected?

The CDC has not published a state-by-state breakdown of the 98 confirmed cases, so a Texas-specific number is not yet public. But because the eggs were grown on Texas farms and sold widely at Texas grocery stores, Texas families are directly in the path of this outbreak.

Official case counts almost always undercount the real number of victims, since many sick people never get tested for Salmonella. If you got sick after eating these eggs, your illness may not yet be reflected in the CDC’s numbers.
