UPDATE: FDA Issues Class 1 Recall for Eggs Linked to Serious Health Risks
On September 30, 2024, the FDA upgraded the egg recall from Milo’s Poultry Farms to a Class 1 recall, due to the risk of “serious” health consequences, including death.
No deaths were reported, but at least 24 people were hospitalized, which is unusually high for a Salmonella outbreak. The strain of Salmonella is resistant to some commonly-used antibiotics (such as nalidixic acid and ciprofloxacin), according to the CDC.
It is more challenging to treat infections with antibiotic-resistant Salmonella. There is a higher risk of life-threatening complications like sepsis, organ failure, or death.

How To Identify Recalled Eggs
On September 6, 2024, Milo’s Poultry Farms LLC recalled eggs that were labeled as Milo’s Poultry Farms, Tony’s Fresh Market, M&E Family Farms, or Happy Quackers Farms.
The recall involves all chicken egg types (such as cage-free, or organic), all cases and carton sizes, and all expiration dates.
These eggs were sold at restaurants, grocery stores, and distributed to other states by food-service companies in Michigan, Wisconsin, and Illinois.
Many of the victims got sick after eating eggs at restaurants, which is why the outbreak involves so many people outside of Michigan, Wisconsin, and Illinois.
