What is Complera?
Complera® is a once-daily, 1-pill HIV medication manufactured by Gilead that combines the medication Truvada® (emtricitabine and tenofovir disoproxil fumarate or TDF) with Edurant® (rilpivirine).
Complera Safety Risks
The problem with Complera is that it contains TDF (tenofovir disoproxil fumarate), which is an older version of tenofovir that must be taken in higher doses. This increases the risk of “additional accumulated kidney and bone toxicity” compared to a newer version of tenofovir.
What is the Problem?
Lawyers claim that Gilead intentionally withheld a safer version of tenofovir to maximize profits on the older version, although Gilead knew that the older version was more likely to cause severe side effects. Gilead is now urging doctors to switch their patients to the new drugs to reduce the risk of side effects to their kidneys, teeth, and bones.

In May 2018, a lawsuit was filed by 2 men who accuse Gilead of hiding tenofovir’s risks while earning billions of dollars as it became one of the world’s most prescribed medicines for HIV.
The plaintiffs include Michael Lujano, a man from Los Angeles who developed bone loss and osteoporosis of the spine, neck and hip. The other plaintiff is Jonathan C. Gary, a man from San Diego who developed Fanconi syndrome, osteopenia, and osteoporosis.
