Eli Lilly & Co. is facing a growing number of lawsuits from men who took Cialis and developed melanoma, a deadly type of skin cancer. Recent studies suggest that Cialis could accelerate the development and invasiveness of melanoma.

What is the problem?
Cialis (tadalafil) is a prescription drug for erectile dysfunction that has been on the market since 2003. It works by inhibiting the enzyme PDE5. Other studies have shown that inhibiting PDE5 increases the invasiveness of melanoma skin cancer cells, which is why experts are concerned about the risk from Cialis.
FDA Investigating Melanoma Risk
In June 2016, the FDA announced that it was deciding whether to issue warnings about the risk of melanoma from erectile dysfunction drugs like Viagra, Cialis, and Levitra. Click here to read more.
Cialis Skin Cancer Lawsuits
In August 2016, Eli Lilly & Co. was hit with seven lawsuits from men who say Cialis causes skin cancer. The company is accused of failing to warn about the “significant risk of exacerbating melanoma.” Click here to read more.
Cialis Lawsuits Centralized in MDL
In December 2016, judges centralized Cialis melanoma lawsuits into a Multi-District Litigation (MDL No. 2691) in the Northern District of California under U.S. District Judge Richard Seeborg. The same MDL involves hundreds of Viagra melanoma lawsuits against Pfizer.
Erectile Dysfunction Drugs and Skin Cancer
In 2014, JAMA Internal Medicine published a study that found an 84% increased rate of melanoma among men on the erectile-dysfunction drug Viagra, which works in the same way as Cialis.
The study began in 2000, when Viagra was the only erectile dysfunction drug on the market. Out of roughly 30,000 men who participated in the study, melanoma occurred in 4.3 of every 1,000 men who did not take Viagra vs. 8.6 of every 1,000 men who did.
What is Melanoma?
Melanoma is the most dangerous type of skin cancer. It occurs when skin cells mutate and grow uncontrollably.
An estimated 76,000 Americans — more than 50% of them men — will be diagnosed with melanoma this year, and almost 10,000 will die from it. Many factors affect the risk, but the most important are age and cumulative sun exposure.
Symptoms of Melanoma
Melanoma may resemble a mole, and it sometimes starts as a mole. If you find a mole with one or more of the following symptoms, make an appointment with your doctor immediately:
- Asymmetrical shape
- Uneven border
- Variety of colors (tan, black, red, white, blue)
- Usually larger than 1/4-inch in diameter
- Changes over time
- Bleeding, itching, or crusting
