UPDATE: Eagle Produce Recalls Cantaloupe for Salmonella Risk
In September 2024, Eagle Produce LLC recalled whole cantaloupes that were sold in Texas and other states under the “KANDY” brand-name due to a risk of Salmonella. The recall involves 224 cases of Kandy Cantaloupes that were distributed to various retail supermarkets between August 13 and August 17, 2024 in Michigan, Missouri, Ohio, Texas and Virginia. No illnesses were reported.
Deadly Salmonella Outbreak Linked to Cantaloupe
In November 2023, a deadly outbreak of Salmonella was linked to cantaloupes that were grown in Mexico and imported to the U.S. and Canada.
The outbreak has sickened at least 16 people in Texas. Dozens of other states have also reported illnesses.
As of December 7, there have been 230 illnesses reported in 38 states, including 96 people who were hospitalized and 3 people who died, according to the CDC Outbreak Investigation.
As of November 24, 2023, health officials reported 99 cases of Salmonella in 32 states between mid-October and mid-November. At least 45 people were hospitalized and 2 people died, according to the CDC Outbreak Advisory. The true number of sick people is likely much higher.
Salmonella illnesses were reported in 32 states, including AR, AZ, CA, CO, GA, IA, IL, IN, KY, MA, MD, MI, MN, MO, MS, NC, NE, NJ, NV, NY, OH, OK, OR, PA, RI, SC, TN, TX, UT, VA, WA, and WI.
Dozens of illnesses and 1 death were also reported by Health Canada. As of November 24, at least 63 people were infected with Salmonella, including 17 people who were hospitalized and one person who died.

- Whole fresh cantaloupe labeled as “Malichita,” “Rudy” or “4050” and “Product of Mexico”
- Crown Jewels Produce (“Malachita / Z Farms”)
- Trufresh (Sofia Produce)
- Pacific Trellis
- ALDI cantaloupe, cut cantaloupe, and pineapple spears in clamshell packages with best-by dates between October 27 and October 31
- Vinyard Fruit and Vegetable Company
- Freshness Guaranteed
- Kwik Trip Fruit Cups and Trays
Texas Company Recalls Cantaloupe for Salmonella Risk
On November 22, 2023, CF Dallas LLC recalled certain pre-cut cantaloupe products due to Salmonella contamination.
The recall includes certain Freshness Guaranteed® and RaceTrac® cantaloupe chunks, fruit medley, fruit mix, seasonal fruit trays, fruit bowls, melon mix, and other products. They werdistributed to certain retail stores in Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, Kentucky, North Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, Illinois, Texas, and Louisiana.
