Salmonella Outbreak Linked to Charcuterie Trays From Sam’s Club and Costco

In January 2024, health officials issued a Food Safety Alert after 47 people were got Salmonella from eating charcuterie meat trays from Sam’s Club and Costco in November and December 2023.

How Many People Got Sick?

The charcuterie trays have sickened at least 47 people with Salmonella in 22 states, including Texas, between November 2023 and January 2024. Ten people were hospitalized. No deaths have been reported.

Busseto Foods Charcuterie Sampler Recalled After Salmonella Outbreak

On January 3, 2024, Fratelli Beretta USA Inc. recalled Busseto Foods Charcuterie Sampler, a meat tray that was sold at Sam’s Club grocery stores in 27 states. The tray contained Prosciutto, Sweet Soppressata, and Dry Coppa.

The recall involves about 11,097 pounds of Busseto charcuterie trays, according to the USDA Food Safety Inspection Service:

  • 18-oz. plastic tray packages containing “BUSSETO FOODS CHARCUTERIE SAMPLER Prosciutto, Sweet Sopressata, and Dry Coppa” with lot code L075330300 and “BEST IF USED BY APR 27 24. “The products are sold as a twin pack with two 9-oz. packages.

What Happened?

The outbreak was first reported on January 2, 2024, when health officials in Minnesota tested an unopened, intact package of Busseto Foods Charcuterie Sampler from a sick person’s home, and found that it was contaminated with the outbreak strain of Salmonella.

What is the Risk?

The symptoms of Salmonella infection include diarrhea, abdominal pain, and fever within 6 hours to 2 weeks after exposure. Healthy people usually recover on their own within a week, but about 28% of people with laboratory-confirmed infections must be hospitalized. There is also a risk of life-threatening complications.
