Timeline of Boar’s Head Deli Meat Recalls in 2024
On July 30, 2024, Boar’s Head expanded a recall to include another 7 million pounds of deli meat that may be contaminated with Listeria. The expanded recall was announced after a sample of liverwurst collected from a store in Maryland tested positive for the same strain of Listeria that is linked to a deadly outbreak of food poisoning.
On July 26, 2024, Boar’s Head Provisions Co. announced the original recall for all liverwurst products that were currently available in stores because it may be contaminated with Listeria. The original recall involved 207,528 pounds of liverwurst and other deli meat items that were made on the same day.
Liverwurst Recall
Boar’s Head recalled liverwurst products that were produced between June 11, 2024, and July 17, 2024, and have a 44-day shelf life.
The liverwurst items were sold in 3.5-pound loaves in plastic casing, or various weight packages sliced in retail delis, containing “Boar’s Head Strassburger Liverwurst MADE IN VIRGINIA.”
The liverwurst items shipped to retailers have sell-by dates ranging July 25, 2024, to Aug. 30, 2024, printed on the side of the packaging.
Expanded Boar’s Head Deli Meat Recalls
The expanded recall also includes 7 million pounds of other Boar’s Head deli products, including pre-packaged deli products, in shelf life from this establishment. Look for “EST. 12612” or “P-12612” inside the USDA mark of inspection on the product labels.
This expansion includes 71 products produced between May 10, 2024, and July 29, 2024, under the Boar’s Head and Old Country brand names.
These items include meat intended for slicing at retail delis as well as some packaged meat and poultry products sold at retail locations. These products have “sell by” dates ranging from 29-JUL-2024 through 17-OCT-24.
These items were distributed to retail delis nationwide.
The recalled deli meat products include:
- Virginia Ham Old Fashioned Ham
- Italian Cappy Style Ham
- Extra Hot Italian Cappy Style Ham
- Bologna
- Beef Salami
- Steakhouse Roasted Bacon Heat & Eat
- Garlic Bologna
- Beef Bologna
- And more
What Happened?
The Maryland Department of Health collected an unopened sample of liverwurst from a retail store and it tested positive for Listeria monocytogenes, according to the recall.
Health officials conducted further testing and determined that the strain of Listeria matches the one that caused a deadly outbreak of Listeria that is linked to deli meats.
How Many People Got Sick?
As of August 8, 2024, a total of 43 people infected with the outbreak strain of Listeria were reported from 13 states, according to the CDC Safety Alert. All 43 were hospitalized. Three deaths were reported in Illinois, New Jersey, and Virginia.
