When a Beyaz VTE occurs, it involves both Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) and a Pulmonary Embolism (PE). The condition can cause severe venous damage, as well as internal organ damage that causes permanent disability or death.

Beyaz VTE
Venous Thromboembolism (VTE) is one side effect of Beyaz (drospirenone / ethinyl estradiol). Beyaz contains a synthetic progestin called drospirenone. One side effect of this hormone is that it can increase the risk of developing a blood clot. The FDA warns that drospirenone may triple the risk of blood clots, which increases the risk of a deadly Beyaz VTE.
Some risk factors increase the risk of a VTE. These risk factors include smoking, being over 35, overweight, and having a family history of venous disorders and blood clots. However, all progestin-containing contraceptives (including Beyaz) increase the risk of blood clots any woman, even women with no risk factors.
What is a Venous Thromboembolism (VTE)?
A Venous Thromboembolism (VTE) is a life-threatening disorder that involves a series of events, beginning with Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) that progresses to a Pulmonary Embolism (PE).
The hormones in Beyaz increase the risk of a blood clot. Red blood cells, platelets, and fibrin collect along the vessel walls, eventually forming clots. The condition is called Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT). The clot can form anywhere in the body, but certain locations are more dangers. Blood clots in the thigh cause pulmonary embolisms in around 50% of cases.
A clot that travels to the lungs and obstructs blood vessels is called a pulmonary embolism. The lack of blood circulating to the lungs can severely decrease the amount of oxygen that reaches the body, as well as causing significant lung tissue damage.
During a Beyaz VTE, the most life-threatening complication is heart failure, cardiac arrest, and death. This can occur when the blood clot causes a major obstruction in the lungs. The heart must generate very high blood pressure. If it cannot do this, the heart will fail.
Signs & Symptoms of a Beyaz VTE
The blood clots that cause Beyaz VTE do not always have symptoms. Even when they do, the symptoms may be so benign that the person does not seek treatment. Minor pain, swelling, and a feeling of unease may or may not prompt a person to go to the hospital. However, even these mild symptoms may portend a Beyaz VTE.
Symptoms of a VTE include:
- Pain, tenderness in the extremities (usually, legs or arms)
- Discoloration or redness of the affected area
- Swelling
- Increased warmth in the affected area
- Rapid pulse
- Shortness of breath
- Chest pain
- Profuse sweating
- Cough, which may be bloody
- Anxiety, apprehension, feeling like something is wrong
Treatment & Prognosis
When a doctor diagnoses a blood clot before it cause a pulmonary embolism, aggressive anti-clotting medications can usually prevent the clot from growing larger and causing a VTE. When a VTE is already occurring, treatment may be more complicated. A severe pulmonary embolism may require surgery to restore circulation.
When the veins are very damaged, Post-Thrombotic Syndrome may occur. This is a long-term, chronic complication characterized by temporary, passing pain, swelling, discomfort, tingling, or numbness in the lower legs.
