Texas Yaz LawsuitBeyaz birth control pills have been linked to an increased risk of Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT), in which deadly blood clots develop deep inside the legs, pelvis, arms, or other parts of the body. When these blood clots become dislodged, they can travel to the lungs and become trapped. This is called a pulmonary embolism.

Overview

Beyaz is a birth control pill that is sold by the drug company Bayer. Beyaz was approved by the FDA in September 2010.

Beyaz is essentially Yaz plus added folate. Both Beyaz and Yaz contain the same hormones — drospirenone and ethinyl estradiol — in the same amounts. Beyaz also contains additional 0.451-mg of folate metabolite, which is a B-vitamin. Doctors know that low folate levels can cause neural tube birth defects, so they recommend that women take a folate supplement or eat foods that are high in folic acid. Another way to get your daily requirement of folate is to take Beyaz.

Beyaz and Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT)

The FDA has recently announced that it will be updating Beyaz’s label (and the labels of all drospirenone-containing birth control pills) to warn that women taking drospirenone may be three times more likely to develop blood clots compared to women taking other progestins. Beyaz blood clots typically form during a condition called Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT).

What is Deep Vein Thrombosis? DVT is a life-threatening medical condition that occurs when blood clots form in the veins located deep inside the body. It is very difficult for the body to dissolve these clots naturally, and they have a tendency to grow larger over. Beyaz DVT blood clots may develop slowly, over the course of several days, but they can also occur within a few hours. Once they reach a certain size, the blood clots typically begin causing swelling, pain, and discoloration of the affected extremity.

One of the major risks of DVT is that, occasionally, the blood clot breaks free from its original location and begins to move along in the bloodstream. Because all veins lead to the heart, the blood clot can occasionally make it all the way into the heart, where it is then pumped into the lungs. Once a blood clot is stuck in the lungs, it cuts off the supply of blood to lung tissue and causes a pulmonary embolism. Untreated pulmonary embolisms result in death in approximately 30% of cases.

Symptoms of Beyaz DVT

Around half of cases of DVT do not have any symptoms, which makes this medical condition exceptionally dangerous. Sometimes, symptoms only appear after the blood clot has become trapped in a major internal organ.

Most birth control pills contain synthetic progestin, including Beyaz. Any woman who is taking a progestin-containing birth control has a slightly higher risk of DVT. Therefore, knowing the symptoms of DVT is a good idea. Symptoms of DVT may include the following:

  • Discoloration of the affected part of the body (such as one leg)
  • Pain in the affected extremity
  • Swelling in the limb
  • Warmth in the area of the blood clot
  • Superficial veins may look engorged
  • Weakness, tingling, or abnormal sensation in the affected limb

Treatment for Beyaz DVT Blood Clots

If you ever suspect that you have DVT, this is an emergency situation and you should seek immediate medical attention. The goal of treatment is to stop the blood clot from getting any bigger. If the blood clot continues to grow, there is a high risk that it will travel to the lungs and cause a pulmonary embolism. Once blood clots are in the lungs, they are very difficult to dissolve. Before this occurs, blood-thinning medications such as heparin or warfarin can prevent the clot from getting any bigger. However, they are not always effective. Sometimes, large blood clots do not respond to these medications very well. In the case of a life-threatening DVT, doctors may be forced to administer an intravenous clot-busting drug to dissolve the blood clot. This treatment has a high risk of bleeding.
