Antiperspirant Sprays Test Positive for Benzene

In November 2021, an independent lab demanded recalls after dozens of antiperspirant sprays tested positive for high levels of benzene, a chemical that is linked to leukemia and cancer.

What Happened?

Valisure, an independent laboratory in Connecticut, tested 108 batches of antiperspirant sprays under 30 brand-names. Benzene was found in 59 batches (54%) of antiperspirant sprays, with the highest levels of benzene found in Old Spice and Secret antiperspirants.

Valisure Sends Petition Demanding Recalls for Benzene in Antiperspirant Sprays

Valisure sent the FDA a petition demanding recalls for 38 antiperspirant sprays with the highest levels of benzene. According to Valisure, benzene was found in antiperspirant sprays under the following brands:

  • Old Spice
  • Secret
  • Tag
  • Sure
  • Walmart’s Equate
  • Suave
  • Right Guard
  • Brut
  • Summer’s Eve
  • Power Stick
  • Soft & Dri
  • Victoria’s Secret

What is the Problem With Butane?

According to Valisure, the problem with antiperspirant sprays is that many use butane as a propellant. Products that used alcohol as a propellant were far less likely to contain benzene. David Light, CEO of Valisure, warned:

“Butane is lighter fluid. Propane is the same thing you use to light your grill. These gases come out of the ground, as benzene does as well. Benzene is a known contaminant of these products. It seems likely these propellants are the source.”

What is the Problem?

Benzene has now been found in a wide range of consumer products that are meant to be sprayed on the body. In addition to antiperspirant sprays, benzene has also been found in sunscreen sprays and anti-fungal foot sprays, like Lotrimin and Tinactin.

In response, a growing number of class action lawsuits have been filed against the manufacturers by consumers who were angry to learn that they were spraying their bodies with cancer-causing chemicals.

Exposure to Benzene Can Be Deadly

According to the American Cancer, benzene is a human carcinogen, and long-term exposure is associated with blood cancers cancers like leukemia and lymphoma. Benzene is also linked to deadly blood disorders and problems with the immune system, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

List of Cancers & Blood Disorders Linked to Benzene

  • Leukemia and Lymphoma
  • Blood cancers of the bone marrow
  • Blood disorders
  • Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML)
  • Chronic Myelogenous Leukemia (CML)
