Shepherd, Texas Chemical Plant Explosion

On November 8, 2023, fire was reported at about 8:17 a.m. at the Sound Chemical Solutions plant in Shepherd, Texas, a rural city located about an hour north of Houston. The explosion sent a billowing cloud of toxic black smoke into the air.

What Happened?

According to local officials, an employee operating a forklift noticed that a container was leaking chemicals. When he tried to lift the container with the forklift, a fire ignited.

The fire spread quickly within the chemical plant, which was storing large amounts of highly-flammable and toxic chemicals, including solvents that were used to manufacture paint remover and glue.

Toxic Chemicals Stored at Shepherd, Texas Chemical Plant

The chemicals stored at the facility included Wood Turpentine, Phosphoric Acid 75%, Xylene, Diesel Fuel, IMP-IC-2012, Sulfuric Acid, CDA-121, CCI-1001-Imidazoline, NP 9, Isopropyl
Alcohol, IMB-BAC-2, AZA-121 Dispersant, and Acetic Acid.

These chemicals were “known to have acute toxicity, carcinogenicity and reproductive toxicity, and may cause serious eye damage or eye irritation, skin corrosion or irritation, aspiration hazard, and organ toxicity,” according to a news release from the Polk County Office of Emergency Management.

Residents Told to Shelter in Place After Explosion

Residents and schools in a 1-mile radius surrounding the chemical plant were told to shelter in place immediately after the explosion. After the order was lifted, residents were told to “limit all unnecessary outdoor activity.”

“At this time, the effects of the chemical in the air are unknown,” according to the Polk County Office of Emergency Management.
