January 16, 2017 — Monsanto has been sued by a man from Colorado who used the weed-killer Roundup and developed Diffuse Large B-Cell Lymphoma (DLBCL), a fast-growing subtype of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.
The lawsuit (PDF) was filed in the U.S. District Court for Colorado — In RE: John Holm v. Monsanto Co. — Case No. 1:17-cv-0056.
The plaintiff is John Holm, a man from Arapahoe County. In a complaint filed on January 6, he alleges that years of exposure to Roundup and its toxic chemical ingredients caused him to develop non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.
Holm says he started using Roundup in 1979 and continued using it on a regular basis, following all safety precautions during use.
Monsanto is accused of failing to warn about the risk of cancer. Until recently, Monsanto marketed Roundup as “safer than table salt” and “practically non-toxic,” which is why many people took little precaution.
Around 50 lawsuits involving people with lymphoma have been centralized into one federal court in the Northern District of California, mostly involving farm-workers, but also some backyard gardeners.
Several lawsuits involve people with Diffuse Large B-Cell Lymphoma (DLBCL), which occurs in 30-40% of people who are diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. Exposure to toxic chemicals is a risk-factor for lymphoma because cancerous B-cells also attack toxic substances in the body.
