The World Health Organization (WHO) warns that exposure to the weed-killer Roundup is probably a risk-factor for cancer. Monsanto, the manufacturer of Roundup, is facing a growing number of lawsuits for downplaying the risk of lymphoma.

Roundup DLBCL Lawsuit

In January 2017, a man from Colorado who was diagnosed with DLBCL filed a lawsuit (PDF) against Monsanto for failing to warn about the risk of cancer. He says he started using Roundup in 1979 and used it routinely — In RE: John Holm v. Monsanto Co. — Case No. 1:17-cv-0056.

Roundup Weed Killer Safety

Roundup contains POEA, a chemical that is extremely toxic to fish and amphibians, and glyphosate, an herbicide that cases cancer in rats and might cause lymphoma in people. Gyphosate kills plants by blocking an enzyme they need to survive. POEA is a surfactant that gets glyphosate into a plant.

Roundup Cancer Warning Information

In the 1990s, Roundup was classified as “possibly carcinogenic in humans” by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) after studies showed it caused cancer in rats.

In 2015, the cancer-research agency of the World Health Organization (WHO) classified Roundup as “probably carcinogenic in humans” based on three studies that found higher rates of non-Hodgkin lymphoma among farm-workers in the U.S., Canada, and Sweden.

Roundup Lawsuits Against Monsanto

Monsanto aggressively defends the safety of Roundup, a product that generated nearly $2 billion in gross profits in 2015. The company may eventually be forced to defend that position in front of a judge and jury. By mid-2016, dozens of Roundup lawsuits were filed by people with non-Hodgkin lymphoma who say Monsanto failed to warn consumers about the risk.

What is DLBCL?

Diffuse Large B-Cell Lymphoma (DLBCL) occurs when white blood cells in the immune system called B-lymphocytes (B-cells) grow out of control. DLBCL is the most common form of Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma (NHL). About one in three people with NHL are diagnosed with DLBCL.

Symptoms of DLBCL

  • Painless lump on the neck, armpit, or groin
  • Enlarged lymph nodes
  • Feeling sick
  • Night sweats
  • Unexplained fevers
  • Unintentional weight-loss
  • Fatigue
  • Stomach or chest pain or pressure
  • Loss of appetite
  • Itching
  • Shortness of breath or cough

Risk-Factors for DLBCL

The American Cancer Society expects 72,000 new cases of non-Hodgkin lymphoma in 2016, which means 25,000 new cases of DLBCL. The average age of diagnosis is 60-65 years old. DLBCL is more common in people with weak immune systems. Exposure to toxic chemicals like benzene, herbicides, or pesticides may increase the risk. In rare cases, slow-growing lymphomas transform into DLBCL.

Tests & Diagnosis

The only conclusive way to diagnose DLBCL is to take a tissue sample (biopsy) from an enlarged lymph node and have a pathologist look at it under a microscope. Blood tests, CT scans, and other tests diagnose the “stage” of the cancer and determine where it has spread.

Treatments for DLBCL

DLBCL is fast-growing and requires immediate treatment. The good news is that survival rates have improved dramatically since the 1990s. About 75% of patients are disease-free after chemotherapy and radiation therapy, and 50% of patients are cured without relapse.
