Overview

The weed-killing chemical in Roundup — glyphosate — was classified as a “probable human carcinogen” based on studies linking it to non-Hodgkin lymphoma in farm-workers. Other experts have raised concerns about another toxic chemical in Roundup — POEA — that also causes serious skin irritation and health problems.

Skin Contact With Roundup

Skin exposure to Roundup can cause irritation or a rash — also known as contact dermatitis. It is not an allergic reaction, but rather direct damage to the skin from a toxic substance. You should wear sturdy gloves to prevent skin contact with Roundup. Any areas of skin that have been exposed should be washed with lots of water.

Roundup Lawsuits

Monsanto is facing a growing number of lawsuits from people who developed non-Hodgkin lymphoma after using Roundup. Monsanto insists Roundup is perfectly safe, which is why it does not have warning labels about cancer. The problem is that many people developed cancer after using Roundup without protective equipment.

What is Skin Lymphoma?

Cutaneous T-Cell lymphoma (CTCL) is a skin cancer that occurs when white blood cells called T-lymphocytes (T-cells) grow uncontrollably within the skin. CTCL is a rare subtype of non-Hodgkin lymphoma, accounting for 4% of all cases.

Types of Cutaneous T-Cell Lymphoma

About 50% of people with CTCL have a slow-growing subtype called Mycosis fungoides. About 5% of people with CTCL have Sézary syndrome, a fast-growing subtype that causes a rash over the whole body and often spreads to the blood.

Early Warning Signs of CTCL

The first symptom of CTCL is usually a patch of skin that is red, scaly, thick, and itchy. It may look like eczema or chronic dermatitis. Over time, the patch may develop into a tumor or an ulcer. The skin is vulnerable to infection and must be carefully protected.

Symptoms of Cutaneous T-Cell Lymphoma

  • Enlarged lymph nodes
  • Rash
  • Pain
  • Dry skin
  • Chronic itchiness
  • Small raised bumps (papules) or hard lesions
  • Tumors on the skin
  • Ulcers (wounds that do not heal)
  • Infections

Complications

The most common complication of CTCL is severe itching and infections. In about 10% of patients, CTCL spreads beyond the skin (metastasizes) to the lymph nodes, bloodstream, or internal organs.

Diagnosis & Tests

It is hard to diagnose CTCL in its early stages because the symptoms and skin biopsy findings resemble other common skin conditions. Doctors may suspect CTCL if a rash does not respond to eczema cream. Blood tests and a lymph node biopsy are often necessary.

Treatment

Skin lymphoma is treatable but not usually curable. In most cases, it grows so slowly that chemotherapy and radiation are not very effective. Instead, treatment may focus on caring for chronic skin problems and improving quality of life.

Coping & Support Networks

The Cutaneous Lymphoma Foundation (CLF) is an online support network with over 700 members from 20 countries. The group also publishes a quarterly newsletter and Q&A for patients diagnosed with cutaneous lymphoma. Other resources for non-Hodgkin lymphoma patients:
