April 20, 2023 — Lipari Foods has recalled tubs of ground cumin in Texas and other states due to a risk of Salmonella contamination.
The recall involves Lipari® Ground Cumin Tubs that were manufactured by International Food.
The products were sold throughout Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Missouri, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Texas, Virginia, and Wisconsin.
The ground cumin was distributed as a generic product with “Distributed by Lipari Foods” on the label. The tub is 6-oz. with Lot Code 220914601, Best By Date 09/2024, and UPC 094776212620.
No illnesses were reported, but a sample of the ground cumin tested positive for Salmonella, according to the FDA and the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD).
Infections with Salmonella can be serious and sometimes fatal, especially for young children, frail or elderly adults, and others with weakened immune systems, according to the FDA:
“In rare circumstances, infection with can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.”
In healthy adults, the symptoms of a Salmonella infection may include a fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. These symptoms usually last for 4 to 7 days.
