January 7, 2016 — One of last year’s most popular holiday gifts may have also been its most dangerous, as hoverboards are linked to dozens of fires, explosions, and severe injuries from falls.
The problem is that some knock-off hoverboards have lithium ion battery packs that are highly-flammable. If the battery short-circuits, it can heat up too quickly and explode, according to Wired.
The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is investigating the problem after receiving reports of 39 emergency room treated injuries, including broken bones and sprained wrists or ankles when people fell off the hoverboard.
According to CPSC Chairman Elliot F. Kaye:
“Some of these injuries have been serious, including concussions, fractures, contusions/abrasions, and internal organ injuries. Always wear a proper helmet and padding while using this product.”
The CPSC is also aware of at least 21 reports of fires in 13 states. One fire burned down a house in Louisiana while it was being charged. There have also been reports of hoverboards exploding when they were being ridden.
