Gold Medal Flour Recalled After 13 People Get Salmonella

May 10, 2023 — General Mills voluntarily recalled certain bags of Gold Medal® Flour after at least 13 people were infected with Salmonella.

The recall was announced after FDA inspectors visited a General Mills facility and confirmed that a sample of flour was contaminated with the outbreak strain of Salmonella.

Between December 2022 and March 2023, at least 13 people in 12 states were infected with Salmonella after eating or touching raw flour, according to the outbreak investigation.

No deaths were reported, but 3 people had to be hospitalized after developing a serious illness.

The recall involves Gold Medal® Bleached and Unbleached All-Purpose Flour (2-pound, 5-pound, and 10-pound bags) with “Better If Used By” dates of March 27, 2024, and March 28, 2024. This product was sold nationwide.

People who are infected with Salmonella can develop a fever, nausea or vomiting, abdominal pain and diarrhea for about a week.

In rare cases, Salmonella infections can cause serious complications like dehydration, arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis, arthritis, or even death.
