Frontier Organic Recalls Garlic Products for Salmonella Risk

March 17, 2015 — Frontier Co-Op has issued a voluntary recall for dozens of products containing organic garlic powder that were sold under the Frontier, Simply Organic, and Whole Foods brands, due to potential contamination with Salmonella.

No illnesses have been linked to these products. The recall was issued after Frontier received raw material that tested positive for Salmonella during a test by the FDA.

Frontier is responding by taking added precautions “beyond FDA guidelines,” such as testing more products in the supply chain, to reduce the risk of this happening again in the future.

Eating products contaminated with Salmonella can cause serious and sometimes deadly food poisoning infections, especially in young children, older adults, and people with weakened immune systems. Healthy adults infected with Salmonella may experience fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain.

According to the FDA:

“In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections, endocarditic and arthritis.”
