April 22, 2019 — Fisher-Price recalled all 4.7 million Rock ‘n Play Sleepers after reports of at least 32 babies who died when they suffocated.
The Rock ‘n Play Sleeper is an inclined seat that is marketed as a safe place for babies to sleep.
Instead, dozens of babies have died and hundreds of others have been injured or nearly suffocated in baby sleepers:
“Since the 2009 product introduction, over 30 infant fatalities have occurred in Rock ‘n Play Sleepers, after the infants rolled over while unrestrained, or under other circumstances.”
Many of the deaths occurred when babies who were unrestrained were able to roll over in the Rock ‘n Play Sleeper, causing them to suffocate with their face against the material.
Deaths have also been linked to positional asphyxia, or an inability to breathe caused by the baby’s position in a baby sleeper. This is a risk for young babies when their chin comes down toward their chest, cutting off their airway.
According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, the only safe way for a baby under 1 year old to sleep is flat on their back with no extra bedding, blankets, or pillows, and only in a crib, Pack ‘n Play, or safety-tested bassinet.
