FDA Shuts Down SoyNut Butter Maker After E. Coli Outbreak

March 31, 2017 — FDA shut down a Kentucky-based producer of SoyNut Butter and other organic products after dozens of children were infected with E. coli.

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) posted an updated case count, reporting 29 illnesses in twelve states. The states of Florida, Illinois, and Massachusetts were added to the list of states reporting cases since the last update.

Case Count by State: Arizona (4), California (5), Florida (1), Illinois (1), Massachusetts (1), Maryland (1), Missouri (1), New Jersey (1), Oregon (9), Virginia (2), Washington (2), and Wisconsin (1).

Inspectors with the FDA visited Dixie Dew Products, Inc., a company in Erlanger, Kentucky that makes SoyNut Butter and food products like marinara sauces, meat glazes, dessert toppings, and many more.

The FDA shut down Dixie Dew after inspectors observed numerous violations — pipes dripping into food kettles, a hole in the ceiling dripping liquid, no hot water or soap for hand-washing, long-broken equipment, a nozzle used to make SoyNut Butter in a pool of water on the floor, food left in kettles over the weekend, and mold growing on the butter itself.

They also observed serious pest infestations in the walk-in coolers and “Quality Control” laboratory:

An apparent 3-inch diameter rodent defiled marking that penetrated the box and the product. … An apparent fly infestation was observed .… Small, apparent flies and larvae, too numerous to count, were inside an unplugged chest freezer… and flying throughout the laboratory.”

Pro Sports Line, a Washington-based customer of SoyNut Butter Co., recalled over 36,000 Yogurt Peanut Crunch Bars sold under the “20/20 Life Styles” brand on March 24 due to possible contamination with E. coli. No illnesses were reported.
