How Did Health Officials Discover This Outbreak?

In July 2026, San Diego County opened an investigation into a cluster of Salmonella illnesses, with at least 13 people who got sick after eating food from Ramona Family Naturals Market. The earliest illnesses were reported on June 21, 2026.

The investigation focused on house-made mayonnaise that contained raw, unpasteurized eggs from Happy Hens. The mayo was used in several food items at the deli counter, health officials said:

“People who ate food purchased at Ramona Family Naturals Market or its deli and develop symptoms should contact their healthcare provider.   The mayo was used in chicken salads and in the Ramona Red Sauce, which is used on sandwiches and is also sold by the bottle. Anyone who purchased the mayonnaise should throw it away.”

In August 20226, health officials traced the eggs used in the mayonnaise to Happy Hens poultry farm. As of August 18, the outbreak had grown to 21 people sickened, including 7 people who were hospitalized.

What Is the Salmonella Risk?

Salmonella can contaminate both the outside and the inside of an egg. To eliminate Salmonella, eggs must be thoroughly cooked until both the yolk and the white are firm.

Symptoms of Salmonella typically begin 12 to 72 hours after eating contaminated food. The illness can persist for 4 to 7 days, and sometimes longer. The symptoms commonly include:

  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea that might have blood or mucus
  • Abdominal cramps
  • Fever

Where Were the Eggs Sold?

No recall has been announced and San Diego County health officials have not listed the stores that received eggs from Happy Hens. Instead, the Department of Environmental Health and Quality contacted retail food facilities with reminders about proper egg storage, grading requirements and resales.

Is This Related to the Egg Recall That Reached Texas?

No. The outbreak strain of Salmonella in this outbreak is NOT related to the multi-state Salmonella outbreak linked to shell eggs that sickened 98 people and prompted a recall earlier in 2026.

That outbreak was linked to Midwest Poultry Services and it has a direct connection to Texas. According to the FDA, Midwest Poultry Services collected samples at farms in Texas. Some of the samples matched the outbreak strain. Midwest Poultry Services recalled white and brown cage-free shell eggs produced and distributed from its Texas farms between June 6 and July 3, 2026.
