April 8, 2014 — The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a warning against using Zi Xiu Tang Bee Pollen capsules because they contain active pharmaceutical drug ingredients that are not listed on the label.
Hidden ingredients in Zi Xiu Tang Bee Pollen include:
- Sibutramine: Appetite-suppressant that was removed from the market in October 2010 because it can increase blood pressure and heart rate, which may present a significant risk to people with a history of coronary artery disease, congestive heart failure, arrhythmias, or stroke.
- Phenolphthalein: Laxative that was pulled off the market after studies showed carcinogenic (cancer-causing) risks.
Chinese Bee Pollen Recall
The FDA previously recalled Zi Xiu Tang Bee Pollen in October 2012 after finding sibutramine. The company apparently re-packaged the product with a red sticker that says “New Anti-Counterfeit” and “Genuine” and continued selling it in the United States.
Zi Xui Tang Bee Pollen is manufactured in China and sold online, retail stores, spas, fitness centers, and by licensed health care professionals. The FDA is investigating the distributors and may take enforcement action or pursue criminal charges.
Side Effects
The FDA has received dozens of reports of side effects, including:
- Heart palpitations
- Increased heart rate
- Suicidal thoughts
- Chest pain
- Diarrhea
- Anxiety
- Insomnia
- Increased blood pressure
- Seizure
