September 5, 2024 — The family of a Texas man who died in an oil refinery explosion has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Marathon Petroleum Co. and others.

The lawsuit was filed by the family of Scott H., a 55-year-old machinist who was burned to death in an explosion at the Marathon Oil Refinery located in Texas City, Texas, on May 15, 2023.

Tragically, he “was unable to get to safety and ultimately burned to death near ultraformer unit #3,” according to the lawsuit.

The lawsuit claims that Marathon failed to maintain fire suppression systems, which could have helped firefighters put out the blaze. Instead, it burned for around 4 hours and spewed toxic chemicals.

The lawsuit was filed against Marathon Petroleum Co., et al. in the U.S. District Court for Harris County, Texas — Case number 2024-58913.
