April 4, 2019 — One worker has died and 2 others were severely injured after a massive explosion at the KMCO chemical processing facility in Crosby, Texas.
The first explosion at the chemical plant was triggered by a highly-flammable gas called isobutylene.
The explosion prompted yet another massive emergency response and shelter-in-place orders, with residents and schoolchildren forced to stay indoors to avoid breathing toxic chemicals in the air.
KMCO has dozens of OSHA violations since 2010 is not currently compliant with the federal Clean Water Act, according to previous reports in the Houston Chronicle.
KMCO refused to tell the Chronicle what chemicals are in its inventory. The facility produces chemicals for the oil field industry, as well as coolant and brake fluid products for the auto industry.
It was the 3rd chemical plant fire in 17 days near Houston. The string of explosions have stretched the resources of the fire marshal’s office.
Investigators are also trying to determine what happened in a major explosion at the Intercontinental Terminal Co. chemical facility in Deer Park, Texas, less than 15 miles away. That fire occurred on March 17.
