March 9, 2017 — Whole Foods Markets recalled Vulto Creamery raw milk cheese after two products tested positive for the food poisoning bacteria Listeria.
Two samples of Ouleout tested positive for Listeria. One sample was tested by the FDA and the other sample was tested by the New York Department of Agriculture.
On March 7, Vulto Creamery recalled all lots of the following four types of raw milk cheese:
- Ouleout
- Miranda
- Heinennellie
- Willowemoc
The products were sold nationwide, but primarily at stores in the Northeastern and Mid-Atlantic States, California, Chicago, Portland (Maine) and Washington, DC.
On March 8, Whole Foods Markets recalled Vulto cheese from 9 stores in Connecticut, Massachusetts, Maine and New York.
Two deaths and several illnesses are under investigation. Listeria infections can be life-threatening. In pregnant women, infections do not usually cause symptoms, but they often suffer miscarriage or stillbirth.
The recall includes Vulto Creamery Ouleout and Miranda cheeses. They were cut and packaged in clear plastic wrap with scale labels beginning with PLU codes #0200305 and #0200306 and “Sell-By” dates between December 27, 2016 and March 28, 2017.
Ouleout cheese was sold at the following Whole Foods stores:
- 350 Grasmere Avenue, Fairfield, CT
- 115 Prospect Street, Cambridge, MA
Miranda cheese was sold at the following Whole Foods stores:
- 170 Great Road, Bedford, MA
- 575 Worcester Road, Framingham, MA
- 647 Washington Street, Newton, MA
- 2 Somerset Street, Portland, ME
- 1425 Central Avenue, Albany, NY
- 250 7th Ave, New York, NY
- 270 Greenwich Street, New York, NY
