Walnut Trail Mix Recalled for Salmonella Risk

March 30, 2015 — An ongoing recall involving walnuts contaminated with Salmonella has expanded to include dozens of products, including trail mixes and cranberry nut mixes that were sold by Aurora Products, Inc.

No illnesses have been linked to any of the recalls. According to the recall notification:

“The potential for contamination was noted after routine testing by an outside company contracted by the FDA revealed the presence of Salmonella in one container of natural walnuts product. Organic walnuts are not affected.”

The walnuts were used in private-label products that use store-branded labeling, including:

• America Choice
• Belmont Market
• Boiceville Market
• Gaul’s Market
• Green Hills Market
• Harvest Co-Op Market
• Hurley Ridge
• Lees
• Miles Market
• Palmers Market
• Union Market
• Walter Stewart
• Windfall Market
• Wild Acorns

These products include raw walnuts, mixed nuts, cranberry trail mix, raisin nut mix, and more. Most of the products were sold in plastic cups, tubs, pouches, or in bulk. Most of the products have “best-by” dates between October and December 2015, which means it is likely that many of the products are still in consumers’ homes.

Salmonella infections can be very serious. Healthy adults may experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain.

Infections can also be life-threatening — especially for young children, older adults, and people with a weakened immune system. According to the FDA:

“In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.”
