Texas Company Recalls Walmart’s Chicken Fried Rice Bowls

In December 2023, a company based in Garland, Texas issued a recall for certain Freshness Guaranteed® Chicken Fried Rice Bowls that were sold at Walmart nationwide.

What Happened?

No illnesses were reported. Instead, the problem was discovered by safety officials during review of testing results, which showed the product tested positive for Listeria monocytogenes, according to the USDA Food Safety Inspection Service (FSIS).

What Chicken Fried Rice Bowls Were Recalled?

The recall involves 13,842 pounds of chicken fried rice bowls that were produced on November 10, 2023. This is a single-serving item that is fully-cooked, but meant to be microwaved before being eaten.

The product was sold in a 12-oz. tray labeled as: “Freshness Guaranteed® CHICKEN FRIED RICE DICED CHICKEN MEAT WITH VEGETABLES AND RICE IN A SAVORY SOY SAUCE.”

The recalled item has Lot Code 595874884 and a Best-If-Used-By date of 11/10/2024.

What is the Risk?

Listeria monocytogenes is a bacteria that can grow on food in the refrigerator and survive in the freezer. Food that is contaminated may not look or smell spoiled.

Eating food that is contaminated with Listeria can result in a severe, life-threatening case of food poisoning. The infection may spread beyond the digestive system to the brain, spinal cord, bloodstream, or body, resulting in severe complications or death.

Pregnant women who are infected with Listeria may have flu-like symptoms. They may also suffer a miscarriage, stillbirth, premature birth, or a life-threatening infection in the newborn baby.

Signs & Symptoms of a Listeria Infection

According to the FDA, the symptoms of a Listeria infection may include:

“Mild symptoms may include a fever, muscle aches, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. If the more severe form of listeriosis develops, symptoms may include headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance, and convulsions.”
