April 10, 2017 — Walmart stores in 8 states recalled Organic Marketside Spring Mix salad after two people in Florida allegedly found rotting parts of a dead bat after they had already eaten some of the salad.
The Florida health department and federal food safety agencies are still investigating. The recall was issued on April 8 for the following product:
- Organic Marketside Spring Mix: 5-oz clear container, Production Code #G089B19, Best-By April 14, 2017, UPC Code #681131328975
The salads were sold exclusively at Walmart stores in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia.
The salad was manufactured by Fresh Express. The company issued a recall for all other salads that were made during the same production run, but no other Marketside or Fresh Express salads.
Both people who reported finding the bat are on medications as if they had been exposed to rabies, although laboratory tests were inconclusive because the bat was too badly decomposed, according to an update from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC).
The CDC recommends that anyone who ate the salad and found “animal material” should contact their local health department. Otherwise, the agency says people who ate the salad “are not at risk and do not need to contact their health department.”
Fresh Express is asking customers to discard the salad and not consume it. They are offering a full refund at the Walmart store where it was purchased. Fresh Express Consumer Response Center can be contacted by phone toll-free at (800) 242-5472 during the hours of 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Eastern Time.
