Wagyu Ground Beef Sold in Texas Recalled for E. Coli Risk

August 30, 2023 — Wagyu ground beef that was sold at restaurants in San Antonio has been recalled by a Texas-based meatpacker due to E. coli contamination.

Dean & Peeler Meatworks, a company based in Poth, Texas, recalled 1,835 pounds of fresh wagyu ground beef that tested positive for E. coli O157:H7 bacteria.

The fresh wagyu ground beef items were shipped to restaurants in the greater San Antonio, Texas area, according to the USDA Food Safety Inspection Service (FSIS).

The following items may be contaminated with E. coli:

• Peeler Farms Wagyu Ground Beef (Lot Code 17836) in 1-lb., 5-lb., and 10-lb. vacuum-sealed bags
• R-C Ranch Texas Craft Meats Wagyu RC13610 Steakhouse Blend – Ground Beef 5-lb. (Lot Code 17816)
• R-C Ranch Texas Craft Meats Wagyu RC13603 – Ground Beef Patties 8-oz. (Lot Code 17816)

The recall was announced after a sample of ground beef tested positive for E. coli O157:H7 by a third-party laboratory. No illnesses were reported, according to health officials.

Even so, infections with E. coli O157:H7 are particularly dangerous for young children, elderly adults, and people with vulnerable immune systems.

This strain of E. coli is more likely to cause a life-threatening type of kidney failure called Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome (HUS). Other symptoms of an infection include dehydration, bloody diarrhea, and severe abdominal cramps.

Health officials warned, “Restaurants are urged not to serve these products. These products should be thrown away or returned to the place of purchase.”
