November 22, 2013 — National Health Service (NHS) hospitals in the United Kingdom will be banned from implanting metal-on-metal hip replacements due to a high rate of failure. A study of 17,000 patients found failure-rates as high as 43% in some patients.
The DePuy ASR implant was associated with a 13% five-year failure rate. After nine years, 43% of patients with the ASR needed revision surgery. The study also found that a similar hip resurfacing implant was associated with a 14% five-year failure-rate and a 36% nine-year failure-rate.
Investigators found that six hip implants had five-year failure-rates above 5%, and some were significantly higher — up to 16%. These implants included:
- Johnson & Johnson Adept
- Corin Cormet 2000
- Zimmer Durom Cup
- Biomet Recap Magnum
- Wright Conserve Plus
- DePuy Corail / Pinnacle total hip replacement (ceramic and metal)
The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) has also issued new draft guidance for “acceptable” failure-rate of hip replacements. The previous benchmark allowed hip implants that had a 10% ten-year failure-rate. This will be lowered to only allow a 5% rate of revision surgery within ten years.
