September 6, 2017 — Uber has reported its first car accident involving a self-driving car occurred on August 16 in San Francisco, California.
The car accident involved an autonomous Uber Volvo XC90s. The vehicle was rear-ended by a Toyota Tacoma pickup truck at an intersection of Geary Blvd. and 3rd Ave. in the Richmond District.
The Uber driver had turned off the self-driving technology — so called “combined advanced driver assist systems” — to wait for pedestrians to cross, according to the San Francisco Examiner.
No injuries were reported at the time, although the Uber driver later reported wrist discomfort. According to Uber’s report to the DMV:
“While the Uber [self-driving vehicle] was stopped, a Toyota Tacoma impacted the rear of the Uber [self-driving vehicle].”
The fender-bender is the first collision reported to the Department of Motor Vehicles since Uber obtained a permit to test self-driving cars in California. Uber had previously been testing the autonomous cars in San Francisco without a permit until March 2017.
