Texas Lawyer for Uber Car AccidentOctober 12, 2017 — Uber will pay $20 million to resolve a class action lawsuit accusing the company of sending illegal automated text messages to people who did not give consent.

Uber was accused of violating the Telephone Consumer Protection Act (TCPA), a federal law that protects consumers from unsolicited spam.

The class action lawsuit was filed by six people who received unsolicited text messages from Uber. The lead plaintiff, Maria Vergara, says she received no less than 8 spam text messages from Uber, despite never using Uber or downloading the app.

The problem with text spam is that people who receive the texts may have to pay money, because some cellphone providers charge for “wireless spam” messages, according to the complaint.

The lawsuit also accuses Uber of routinely sending text messages to incorrect phone numbers, as well as people who never gave permission for their phone numbers to be used for advertising.

The settlement involves anyone who received unsolicited text messages from Uber between December 31, 2010 and August 17, 2017.

The settlement must still be approved by a judge in Illinois in January 2018. Lawyers have proposed $10,000 to each of the 6 plaintiffs and $6.7 million in attorneys’ fees, which would leave $13.2 million to be split between an unknown number of people who join the class action.

Claim forms to join the class action lawsuit must be submitted by December 15, 2017. More information can be found at www.UberTCPASettlement.com.
