How Was The Outbreak Discovered?

In July 2026, the Florida Department of Health identified a cluster of E. coli O145 illnesses. Interviews with sick people pointed to frozen GreenWise organic blueberries that were sold at Publix.

The supplier, Frutas y Hortalizas del Sur S.A., recalled 1 lot of those blueberries on July 3, 2026. According to the FDA outbreak investigation, there were 17 illnesses reported in 2 states (Florida and Georgia).

Further testing confirmed that a sample of frozen berries from Publix were positive for the same strain of E. coli involved in the outbreak.

The recall expanded to include frozen berries that were sold under Walmart’s Great Value® brand-name in September 2026. An additional expanded recall in October 2026 added Trader Joe’s products and more Walmart products.

Expanded Recall: October 2026 Recall Adds Trader Joe’s and Walmart Products

On October 2, 2026, the supplier announced an expanded recall to add more lots of Great Value® Organic Triple Berry Blend and Great Value® Organic Blueberries to its recall, along with 1 lot of Trader Joe’s® Organic Mixed Berry Blend.

The recall does not report any new illnesses that were linked to the added products. Consumers can check the lot code and “Best-By” date on any bag of frozen berry products that may still be in your freezer. The expanded recall includes:

  • Great Value Organic Triple Berry Blend, 10 oz (UPC 7874211226) — lot codes 6 031 01 and 6 041 01 on the front of the package, Best If Used By January 31, 2028 and February 10, 2028
  • Great Value Organic Blueberries, 10 oz (UPC 7874211213) — lot codes 6 019 01, 6 040 01 and 6 163 01 on the front of the package, Best If Used By January 19, 2028, February 9, 2028 and June 12, 2028
  • Trader Joe’s Organic Mixed Berry Blend, 12 oz (UPC 00977654) — lot code 6 051 01 on the back of the package, Best Before February 20, 2028

Were the Recalled Berries Sold in Texas?

Texas is on the distribution list for both Trader Joe’s and Walmart’s recalled frozen berry products. The Great Value® berry products were shipped to select Walmart stores in 30 states and Puerto Rico. The Trader Joe’s products were distributed to select stores in 26 states and Washington, DC.

To check if your frozen berries are affected by the recall, look for the lot codes listed in the recall notice. Do not consume the product. How Many People Got Sick?

The outbreak involves at least 17 people who got sick, including 6 people who were hospitaliz. No deaths were reported. Illnesses started on dates between May 11, 2026 and August 2, 2026.

Symptoms of E. Coli O145

E. coli O145 can lead to a serious food poisoning illness that may include symptoms like severe stomach cramps, diarrhea (which may be bloody), and vomiting. The FDA adds fever and nausea and says symptoms can begin a few days after eating contaminated food or up to 9 days later. Symptoms include:

  • Severe stomach cramps
  • Bloody or watery diarrhea
  • Vomiting and nausea
  • Fever

Most healthy people recover within a week, but some people develop a severe kidney complication called Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome (HUS). This is a type of kidney failure that can be especially harmful for children, older adults, and people with weakened immune systems.
