August 21, 2019 — Tip Top Poultry Inc. recalled approximately 135,000 pounds of fully-cooked, frozen, diced chicken due to a risk of Listeria.
The recall was issued after a sample tested positive for Listeria during an investigation into an outbreak of Listeria illnesses in Canada, with 7 people sickened.
In the U.S., the recalled chicken was sold under brand-names such as Tip Top®, Perdue Farms®, Gordon®, Sysco®, and West Creek®.
The products were distributed nationwide to hotels, restaurants, nursing homes, and other institutions.
The recalled items were produced on January 21, 2019 and labeled with Establishment number “P-17453” inside the USDA mark of inspection on the box.
Infections with Listeria monocytogenes bacteria can be very serious if the bacteria gets into the bloodstream or nervous system. These infections can cause complications such as meningitis, sepsis, or death.
Pregnant women who are infected may suffer a miscarriage, stillbirth, or a life-threatening infection of the newborn baby.
