What is Zubsolv?

Zubsolv® (buprenorphine and naloxone) is a medication that is used to treat opioid use disorder. Zubsolv is prescribed to patients who are undergoing a treatment program to break their addiction to opioids.

What is the Problem?

Zubsolv is a fast-dissolving tablet that is placed under-the-tongue for 5-10 minutes. The problem is that the ingredients in Zubsolv are very acidic. Zubsolv can also cause a dry mouth. This can create conditions in the mouth that permanently destroys the tooth enamel and causes cavities, tooth loss, and other severe dental problems.

Who Is At Risk?

Tooth decay from Zubsolv can occur even in people with no history of dental problems. The risk is especially serious for patients who are on long-term treatment with Zubsolv, or a similar buprenorphine-containing medication that dissolves in the mouth, such as Suboxone.

FDA Updates Warnings for Tooth Decay

In January 2022, the FDA issued a Safety Communication after more than 300 patients reported dental problems after using Zubsolv and other buprenorphine medicines that are dissolved in the mouth:

“The dental problems, including tooth decay, cavities, oral infections, and loss of teeth, can be serious and have been reported even in patients with no history of dental issues.”

The FDA ordered drug-makers to add a new warning about the risk of dental problems to the Prescribing Information for Zubsolv, as well as the Medication Guide that is commonly given to patients by doctors.

Side Effects of Zubsolv

  • Cavities
  • Tooth decay
  • Cracked or chipped teeth
  • Rotting and broken teeth
  • Teeth falling out
  • Visible stains, pits, holes, or cavities
  • Infections
  • Dental abscesses
  • Gum disease
  • Need for oral surgery
  • And more

Study Links Buprenorphine and Tooth Decay

In December 2022, a major study was published in JAMA by researchers who found a 2X increased risk of tooth decay from under-the-tongue versions of buprenorphine, such as Zubsolv and Suboxone.

Patients who used sublingual (under-the-tongue) buprenorphine medications were twice as likely to suffer from cavities, tooth loss, and other severe dental problems that required oral surgery.

The estimated risk of dental problems was about 21.6 people out of every 1,000 people who used these medications. The researchers also warned:

“Sublingual buprenorphine/naloxone is acidic in nature. Patients are instructed to hold the tablet under the tongue for 5 to 10 minutes to maximize absorption. Thus, prolonged acidic exposure of the drug in the mouth might lead to tooth damage.”

How Does Zubsolv Work?

Zubsolv acts like a weak opioid in the body, but it does not make a person feel “high.” Instead, Zubsolv blocks the effects of other opioids, reduces withdrawal symptoms, and helps patients manage cravings, which can help people quit opioids and avoid relapsing.

Can I File a Lawsuit?

Lawsuits have been filed by people who claim that drug-makers failed to warn them about the risk of severe tooth decay from Suboxone and other buprenorphine-containing medications.

These lawsuits are being filed against pharmaceutical companies who make Suboxone and other buprenorphine medications, such as Indivior, Reckitt Benckiser, Aquestive Therapeutics, and MonoSol Rx.

Is There a Class Action Lawsuit for Zubsolv?

There is not yet a class action lawsuit for patients who were diagnosed with tooth decay after using Zubsolv. Instead, our lawyers are filing individual lawsuits for people who were injured by Zubsolv, Suboxone, Belbuca, and similar medications.

The plaintiffs in these lawsuits are seeking a settlement or financial compensation for their pain and suffering, medical bills, disfigurement, long-term injuries, lost income, decreased quality of life, and more.
