Texas Yaz LawsuitThe FDA is now warning women who take Yaz that this medication increases your risk of developing a blood clot, which can cause a deadly Yaz stroke. When a stroke occurs, a blood clot travels to the brain and can cause permanent brain damage, lifelong disability, or death.

Yaz is a birth control pill that is manufactured by Bayer HealthCare Pharmaceuticals, Inc., and was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2006. Since the approval of Yaz, it quickly skyrocketed in popularity, becoming the most popular birth control pill in the U.S. in just a couple years. The meteoric success of Yaz was short-lived, however. In 2009, a series of critical studies were published. These studies indicated that an ingredient in Yaz — drospirenone — was linked to a higher risk of blood clots. The popularity of Yaz dropped significantly following those studies.

Like all hormonal birth control pill, Yaz contains a combination of synthetic estrogen and progestin. The progestin in Yaz is called drospirenone. When this ingredient was first used in Yasmin birth control pills in 2001, Bayer claimed that it could treat a wide variety of hormonal side effects, symptoms of PMS, and had a lower risk of side effects. After Yaz and Yasmin were used by millions of women, this was not proven to be the case.

Hundreds of thousands of women were involved in several massive studies of the effects of drospirenone. These studies concluded that women taking drospirenone had as much as a three-fold increased risk of developing blood clots. In April of 2012, the FDA announced that the label on Yaz and other drospirenone-containing birth control pills would be updated to include this risk information.

Yaz and Strokes

An ischemic stroke (or a cerebral embolism) occurs when a blood clot travels to the brain and gets stuck inside a blood vessel that is too small.

On its own, a blood clot is not usually dangerous, unless it grows so large that it blocks the blood vessel where it forms. One of the biggest risks with blood clots is that they tend to break loose once they grow to a certain size. Once in the bloodstream, the clot travels until it gets stuck in a major internal organ, such as the brain.

When a blood clot is trapped in the brain, it cuts off the supply of oxygen-rich blood. The tissues ahead are suddenly starved of oxygen, and within minutes brain cells begin to die. If the obstruction is not cleared quickly, large sections of the brain may become severely, irreparably damaged. This is why early treatment is vital to survival.

Symptoms of a Yaz Stroke

All hormonal birth control pills increase a woman’s risk of a stroke. The long-term prognosis for strokes is best when they are treated quickly. Therefore, it is a good idea for all women who use a hormonal birth control pill (including Yaz) to know the symptoms of a stroke so they can seek treatment as quickly as possible.

Stokes may cause the following symptoms:

  • Headache that is sudden and severe. It may wake a person from sleep. It may grow worse with movement
  • Changes in consciousness, including confusion, loss of memory, blacking out, dizziness, sleepiness, etc.
  • Abnormal changes in senses. This may include blurry vision, loss of vision, strange taste in the mouth, sudden hearing loss, changes in ability to sense temperature, or changes in touch.
  • Poor motor coordination, which could cause clumsiness, loss of balance, having trouble walking, inability to write, or difficulty swallowing
  • Weak muscles in the face, arms, or legs, usually just one one side. The face may appear to droop on one side
  • Numbness, tingling sensations on one side of the body
  • Difficulty talking or understanding what other people are saying
  • Sudden changes in personality, mood, or emotion
