Yasmin is known to cause pancreatitis. This severe, life-threatening side effect causes extreme pain and debilitation. If the illness is not treated effectively, it can progress until the pancreas begins hemorrhaging, which causes pancreatic tissue to die. Once this tissue is damaged or killed, it is highly susceptible to infection. Many women who have Yasmin pancreatitis must have surgery to remove the dead, infected pancreatic tissue, because an infection that progresses can cause multiple organ system failure and death.

Yasmin is a birth control pill sold by Bayer. The FDA approved Yasmin in 2001, and it was promoted as a safer way to reduce the risk of unwanted pregnancy compared to older birth control pills. Since its inception, more than a decade of scientific evidence and adverse event reports has built the case against Yasmin. The FDA now warns that women who use Yasmin have as much as a three-fold increased risk of blood clots, which can cause death. Another life-threatening side effect of Yasmin birth control is the risk of pancreatitis.

Yasmin Pancreatitis

Pancreatitis is a known side effect of Yasmin. Experts have linked this severe side effect to many hormonal therapies, including birth control pills. Yasmin contains a combination of two hormones (estrogen and progestin), and it is likely that the estrogen in Yasmin is associated with an increased risk of pancreatitis.

Experts hypothesize that estrogen may adversely affect the way the body metabolizes lipids. It may also increase the amount of triglycerides in the bloodstream. Yasmin is also a mild diuretic, and over time, diuretic medications are associated with an increased risk of pancreatitis.

What is Pancreatitis?

Pancreatitis is an inflammation of a digestive gland called the pancreas, and it typically causes severe abdominal pain. The onset may be sudden or gradual, over the course of several days.

The pancreas is a digestive gland located near the liver and gallbladder. Its purpose is to secrete powerful digestive enzymes that break down proteins, fats, and carbohydrates. The pancreas also secretes hormones such as insulin and glucagon that help the body metabolize these nutrients.

Inflammation of the pancreas is a life-threatening illness. If it progresses untreated, it can cause pancreatic tissue to start hemorrhaging. This disrupts the supply of oxygenated blood to pancreatic tissue, which can cause the tissue to be severely damaged or killed. Damaged pancreatic tissue is highly likely to develop an infection, which is why many people with this illness must have a surgeon remove damaged parts of the pancreas.

Signs & Symptoms of Yasmin Pancreatitis

Pancreatitis causes severe pain in the abdominal region, which may occur suddenly, or develop gradually over several days. Women who have diabetes and other risk factors are most likely to develop Yasmin pancreatitis, but even young, healthy women have suffered this severe side effect after taking Yasmin.

All women who take Yasmin have an increased risk of suffering from Yasmin pancreatitis. It is a good idea to be familiar with the symptoms. Yasmin pancreatitis symptoms may include:

  • Abdominal pain that is severe. It may occur suddenly, without warning, or grow progressively worse over several days. The pain may radiate to the back or other parts of the body. It may be worst after eating a meal.
  • The abdomen may be sensitive to the touch
  • Nausea, vomiting
  • Indigestion
  • Fever
  • Oily, smelly stools
  • The person may look and feel very ill
