84,000 Woom Bikes for Kids Recalled After 19 Children Injured
In July 2023, the Austin, Texas-based bike company Woom Bikes USA issued a recall for about 84,000 Woom ORIGINAL bikes (model-years 2018 through 2021) due to a risk of severe, life-threatening injuries when the handlebars loosen or detach.
What Happened?
The recalled bicycles have a one-bolt stem design. If the bolt is not tight, the handlebars can loosen or detach from the bike during use, causing the rider to lose control and crash.
Woom explained that the “risk of injury is more likely to occur when the stem clamp bolt is not sufficiently tightened.”
How Many Kids Got Hurt?
Woom Bikes said there were 77 reports of the handlebar stem loosening or detaching. At least 19 children suffered injuries when they crashed or fell, including cuts, bruises, and scrapes (abrasions), according to the recall notice.
Was My Kids Bike Recalled?
The recall involves Woom ORIGINAL bikes (model-years 2018 through 2021), which have one silver bolt to clamp onto the steerer tube. They were sold nationwide in the U.S. and Canada from September 2018 through March 2022 for between $200 and $530.
Six versions of Woom ORIGINAL Bikes were recalled, including: woom 1, woom 1 Plus, woom 2, woom 3, woom 4, woom 5 and woom 6.
woom 1 and woom 1 PLUS are balance bikes; the rest have pedals.
Has Woom Bikes Announced Other Recalls?
Woom Bikes USA has recently announced two other recalls, including:
- Woom model 4, 5, 6 bicycles: These bicycles were recalled in March 2020 because the front fork can detach or loosen, which poses crash and injury hazards.
- Woom Children’s Helmets: These bike helmets for kids were recalled in August 2020 due to a risk of serious head injuries.
