Lawsuits Estimate $1 Billion in Damage from Texas Wildfires
The deadly Smokehouse Creek wildfire in Texas is estimated to have caused over $1 billion in damage. At least two people died, dozens of homes were burned, hundreds of buildings were destroyed, and thousands of cattle and other livestock died in the fast-moving fire.
What Caused the Smokehouse Creek Wildfire?
The Smokehouse Creek wildfire was unusual because it occurred in late February in the Texas Panhandle and Oklahoma. The flames were fanned by strong winds in excess of 60mph, and fueled by dry vegetation, unseasonably high temperatures, and low humidity.
Texas Wildfire Lawsuits Blame Xcel Energy
Lawyers quickly pointed the blame on Xcel Energy, a utility company that is based in Minnesota. The source of the Smokehouse Creek wildfire was a utility pole that had been red-tagged earlier in the year by an inspection company who said that it needed to be replaced immediately and was too dangerous to climb.
What Happened?
Lawsuits claim that the utility pole splintered and fell over during high winds, causing electrified power lines to hit the ground and ignite dry grasses. Xcel Energy denied that it failed to maintain the pole, but agreed that it appeared to have been involved in igniting the wildfire.
Can I Join a Class Action?
Lawsuits are being filed against Xcel Energy and other utility companies by people who suffered financial losses or property damage in the Smokehouse Creek wildfire in Texas. These lawsuits blame the wildfire on poorly-maintained utility poles and power lines.
About Class Action Lawsuits
Class action lawsuits are commonly filed when a large number of people have similar legal claims. Lawyers choose one person to be a class representative, and this person files a lawsuit on behalf of everyone who was also harmed. If compensation is awarded, members of the class action can share the payout or opt-out.
