FDA Finds Chromium in Applesauce Pouches

The cinnamon ingredient in recalled applesauce pouches has tested positive for “high levels” of chromium, according to the FDA.

The lead-to-chromium ratio was consistent with lead chromate, which is brightly-colored and cheap chemical that criminals use to add color to spices like cinnamon or turmeric to increase its value.

This type of chromium (VI) is known to cause cancer, as well as other side effects. The cinnamon also tested positive for lead contamination that was 2,000-times higher than the FDA’s proposed limits.

Parents File 1st WanaBana Applesauce Lead Poisoning Lawsuit

The parents of a 1-year-old girl who was diagnosed with severe lead poisoning after being fed dozens of WanaBana Cinnamon Applesauce Pouches has filed a lawsuit against WanaBana USA.

According to the lawsuit, the little girl was found to have 20 mcg/dL of lead in her blood, when the normal amount is under 3.5 mcg/dL.

Her parents filed a class action lawsuit against WanaBana USA on October 31, 2023. They are seeking to represent other consumers who also purchased these applesauce pouches.

What Should I Do?

  • Get a blood test: Children who ate the recalled WanaBana Cinnamon Applesauce Pouches may need to get a blood test. This is the only way to conclusively diagnose lead poisoning.
  • Tell your child’s doctor: Parents or caregivers should tell their doctor that the child was exposed to lead, so that the child can be screened for symptoms and long-term complications.
  • Get checkups: Children who are diagnosed with lead poisoning will need routine checkups due to permanent brain damage and developmental delays.
  • Get help in school: Lead poisoning can cause under-performance in school due to brain damage and problems with attention, behavior, hearing, and speech delays, so the child may need an Individual Education Plan (IEP).

WanaBana Recalls Applesauce Pouches for “Extremely High” Lead Levels

In October 2023, WanaBana USA issued a nationwide recall for WanaBana Apple Cinnamon Fruit Puree Pouches after tests discovered “extremely high” lead levels in the cinnamon ingredient.

In November 2023, the FDA said that it tested a sample of WanaBana apple cinnamon puree. They found lead levels at 2.18 parts per million (ppm), which, for context, is more than 200 times greater than the action level the FDA has proposed for applesauce and fruit purees.

Recalled Applesauce Pouches May Still Be in Stores

The FDA is aware that recalled WanaBana Apple Cinnamon Puree is still on the shelves at several Dollar Tree stores in multiple states. This product should not be available and consumers should not purchase this product.
