Organic Walnuts Linked to E. coli Outbreak
In April 2024, the California-based company Gibson Farms announced a recall for shelled walnuts that were linked to an outbreak of E. coli.
How Many People Got E. coli From Walnuts?
The walnut E. coli outbreak infected at least 12 people in two states: California (6) and Washington (6), but it is likely that more illnesses were not been reported, according to the FDA.
At least 7 people had to be hospitalized due to a severe infection, but no deaths have been reported to the CDC. The illnesses were reported between February and April 2024, according to the CDC Outbreak Investigation
In interviews with CDC health officials, 10 people said they ate walnuts before they fell ill, and almost all of them said they bought the walnuts from bulk bins at food co-ops or natural food stores.
Where Were The Walnuts Sold?
The walnuts were labeled as “Organic Light Halves and Pieces Shelled Walnuts.” They were sold in the bulk bins at over 300 stores in Texas and 18 other states, including Whole Foods and other natural food stores, co-ops, and neighborhood markets. Some stores may have re-packaged the walnuts and sold them in plastic containers.
Gibsons Farms Organic Light Halves and Pieces shelled walnuts were sold in bulk boxes (Net Wt. 25 lbs). The boxes can be identified by Lot 3325-043 and Lot 3341-501, expiration dates: 5/21/25 and 6/7/25.

Bulk Walnuts May Have Been Re-Packaged in Plastic Containers
According to the FDA: “These products may have been repacked from their original packaging or sold in bulk. This list may not include all retail establishments that have received the recalled product or may include retail establishments that did not actually receive the recalled product. Therefore, it is important that you use the product-specific identification information, available here, in addition to this list of retail stores, when you check the food you have to see if it has been recalled.”
What is the Risk?
The outbreak has been traced to a Shiga-toxin producing strain of E. coli O157:H7, which is more likely to cause serious, life-threatening complications or death, according to the CDC. Infections often cause diarrhea (which is often bloody), severe stomach cramps, and vomiting. Most healthy adults recover within about a week.
E. coli O157:H7 can potentially cause a life-threatening type of kidney failure called Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome (HUS). This is more likely to occur in young children or elderly adults.
