FDA Warns People Not To Eat Radioactive Shrimp

In August 2025, the FDA warned people in Texas and other states that Walmart may have sold radioactive frozen shrimp. According to the warning, there is a possibility of radioactive Cesium-137 contamination in certain lots of Great Value® Raw Frozen Shrimp products that were sold at Walmart.

What is the Problem?

Health officials said no illnesses or injuries were reported, and no products in stores have tested positive for radioactive Cesium-137 yet.

Even so, the FDA is aware that Walmart received shipments of raw frozen shrimp that may be contaminated with low levels of Cesium-137, which is a radioactive isotope that could pose health risks like cancer.

How To Identify Potentially Radioactive Shrimp Products

The FDA is urging people not to eat or serve these specific lots of Great Value® Raw Frozen Shrimp products from Walmart:

  • Great Value Frozen Raw Shrimp — lot code: 8005540-1, Best by Date: 3/15/2027
  • Great Value Frozen Raw Shrimp — lot code: 8005538-1, Best by Date: 3/15/2027
  • Great Value Frozen Raw Shrimp — lot code: 8005539-1, Best by Date: 3/15/2027

These products were sold at Walmart stores in 13 states, including Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Missouri, Mississippi, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Texas, and West Virginia.

How Was The Problem Discovered?

U.S. Customers & Border Protection (CBP) officials detected Cesium-137 in shipping containers that arrived at U.S. ports in Los Angeles, Houston, Savannah, and Miami.

These shipping containers were used to deliver frozen raw shrimp products that were processed by a company in Indonesia called PT. Bahari Makmur Sejati (BMS Foods) and sold in the U.S. at Walmart.

The FDA collected samples of frozen shrimp that arrived in the radioactive shipping containers, and confirmed that a sample of breaded shrimp was also contaminated with low levels of Cesium-137.

These shipping containers and radioactive shrimp products were denied entry into the U.S., but earlier shipments were sent to Walmart, and may have been sold to consumers.

What Should I Do?

The FDA recommends that people who think they were exposed to elevated levels of radioactive Cesium-137 in contaminated shrimp should talk to a healthcare provider.
