What is the Problem?
Lawsuits have been filed against Walmart by people who were injured by pressure cookers. These lawsuits involve Farberware Pressure Cookers and other products sold at Walmart.
Walmart Pressure Cooker Lawsuit Filed by Burned Woman
In July 2025, a pressure cooker lawsuit was filed against Walmart by a woman from Illinois who was burned by a Farberware 7-in-1 Programmable Pressure Cooker explosion on August 14, 2023.
What Happened?
She was seriously burned as a “result of the pressure cooker’s lid suddenly and unexpectedly exploding off the pressure cooker’s pot,”
According to her lawsuit, opening the lid released the built-up pressure still trapped inside, “allowing its scalding-hot contents to be forcefully ejected from the pressure cooker” and onto her body.
Her Walmart Pressure Cooker Lawsuit was filed on July 2, 2025 in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois (Eastern Division) — Case: 1:25-cv-07435.
Lawsuit Claims Walmart Sold Defective Pressure Cookers
Lawsuits accuse Walmart of selling pressure cookers that are defective and dangerous because the safety mechanisms can fail to lock the lid and prevent it from opening when the unit is pressurized.
Does The Lid Actually Lock?
Walmart advertised the safety features of the Farberware 7-in-1 Programmable Pressure Cookers, with statements claiming that it has a “large locking lid to prevent the cooker from opening when pressurized,” which is advertised to help keep consumers safe.
The Owner’s Manual also claims that “important safeguards” prevent the lid from unlocking until “the float valve drops down by itself.”
Lawsuits have been filed by people who purchased the Farberware Pressure Cooker from Walmart, believing it was safe. Instead they suffered severe burns when the lid suddenly exploded off the pot.
What Are Walmart Pressure Cookers?
Walmart is one of the largest retailers in the U.S., and they sell a variety of pressure cookers in stores and online at Walmart.com.
This includes both electric pressure cookers like the Instant Pot, as well as traditional stovetop pressure cookers. Walmart also sells multi-cookers, slow cookers, or pressure cookers with an air fryer in the lid.
Some of the brand-name products available at Walmart include:
- Farberware
- IMUSA
- Instant Pot
- MegaChef
- Midea
- Ninja Foodi
- Presto
- And more
Lawsuits Filed After Millions of Pressure Cookers Recalled
Hundreds of lawsuits have been filed by people who were burned by pressure cookers. These lawsuits generally accuse manufacturers of selling a product that was dangerously defective because it exploded.
Many of these pressure cookers were advertised to have safety features that lock the lid, or prevent the unit from building up pressure unless the lid is properly secured to the pot. Instead, millions of pressure cookers have been recalled in recent years because the lid does not effectively.
What Do Lawsuits Claim?
Each case is unique, but many lawsuits involve lids that failed to lock. Some lawsuits involve lids that suddenly exploded off the pot without warning. Other lawsuits involve people who were burned when they were able to open the lid before the unit was fully de-pressurized.
What is the Risk?
Pressure cooker lawsuits frequently involve burn injuries that were devastating, extremely painful, required hospitalization or surgery.
If the lid opens when there is still pressure trapped inside the pot, it can eject scalding-hot food and liquid onto anyone nearby. People can suffer severe burn injuries in pressure cooker accidents, including:
- Extensive scalds from a hot steam cloud
- Sticky boiling-hot food and liquid can soak into clothing, resulting in 3rd-degree burns within seconds.
- Hospitalization or treatment in a burn unit
- Skin grafts
- Surgery
- Scarring and disfigurement
- Disability (such as nerve damage or blindness)
- And more
