Walmart’s Great Value Cottage Cheese Recalled for Health Risk
In February 2026, Saputo Cheese USA — the company that manufactures Great Value® cottage cheese for Walmart — announced a recall after discovering that pasteurization equipment malfunctioned during production.
No illnesses were reported, but the dairy ingredients in the cottage cheese may not be fully-pasteurized. This may pose a health risk if the ingredients are contaminated with bacteria like Listeria, E. coli, Salmonella, or other microbes that cause food poisoning.
What Happened?
The malfunction was detected during routine troubleshooting conducted with the California Department of Food and Agriculture. The recalled products were distributed to Walmart stores in 24 states between February 17 and February 20, 2026.
What Cottage Cheese Products Were Recalled?
The recall covers the following Great Value® Cottage Cheese products that were sold exclusively at Walmart stores. The product is sold in a white plastic tub with a white lid. The “Best If Used By” date is on the side of the lid.
- Great Value® Fat Free Small Curd Cottage Cheese (0% Milkfat) — 24 oz., UPC 078742373393, Best By April 1 or April 3, 2026
- Great Value® Lowfat Small Curd Cottage Cheese (2% Milkfat) — 24 oz., UPC 078742116730, Best By April 1, 2, or 3, 2026

- Great Value® Small Curd Cottage Cheese (4% Milkfat) — 3 lb., UPC 078742147970, Best By April 1 or April 2, 2026
Where Was It Sold?
The recalled cottage cheese products were distributed to Walmart stores in 24 states, including Texas. The complete list of states includes:
- Alaska
- Alabama
- Arkansas
- Arizona
- California
- Colorado
- Georgia
- Iowa
- Idaho

- Utah
- Washington
- Wyoming
What Are the Health Risks?
No illnesses were reported when the recall was announced, but there is a risk of foodborne illness if people consume these products. Dairy products that are not fully pasteurized can contain dangerous bacteria, including Listeria, Salmonella, E. coli, Campylobacter, and other microbes.
What Should You Do?
Check your refrigerator immediately. If you have any of the recalled products with matching UPC codes and Best By dates, do not eat them. You can return them to any Walmart for a full refund with no receipt required.
If you or a family member already ate the recalled cottage cheese:
- Watch for symptoms of food poisoning (fever, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, cramping, and muscle aches, etc.)
- See a doctor right away if symptoms appear. Tell your provider you may have been exposed to under-pasteurized dairy in a recalled product.
- Save your evidence — Keep packaging, receipts, and all medical records. This documentation will support your legal claim.
