Walmart Recalls Marketside Celery Sticks for Listeria Risk
In April 2025, Walmart stores in Texas and dozens of other states recalled certain bags of Marketside® celery sticks that may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, a bacteria that may cause severe, life-threatening food poisoning infections.
What is the Problem?
The recall was announced on April 10 by Duda Farm Fresh Foods Inc., after a random sample of celery sticks tested positive for Listeria. There were no reports of illnesses related to the recall.
Celery Recalled After Sample Tests Positive for Listeria
The potential for Listeria contamination was “discovered during random sampling by the Georgia Department of Agriculture from a Georgia store location where one of multiple samples yielded a positive test result,” according to the recall.
What Celery Sticks Were Recalled?
The recall involves 1,587 cases of Marketside® Celery Sticks. These products were pre-washed, ready-to-eat, and sold in 4-count bundles in 1.6-oz. plastic bags.
The plastic bag is labeled with the following information:
- Marketside Celery Sticks
- 4-count celery sticks bundled in a 1.6-oz plastic bag
- UPC code 6 81131 16151 0
- Best if Used by Date 03/23/2025
- Lot Code: P047650
These products were distributed to select Walmart stores in: AL, CA, CO, DC, DE, FL, GA, HI, IA, IL, IN, KS, KY, MD, MI, MO, MT, NC, NJ, NY, OH, PA, SC, TN, TX, VA, WI, WV, WY.
What Should I Do?
The recalled celery stick products are past their shelf-life and should no longer be in stores. Even so, Walmart is urging customers to check for the recalled product, which may have been frozen for later use.
What is the Risk?
Listeria monocytogenes is a bacteria that can survive on foods that are refrigerated or frozen. People who eat contaminated food can develop a serious type of food poisoning called listeriosis. The risk of severe complications is greatest for young children, pregnant women, elderly adults, and people with vulnerable immune systems.
